Big changes are coming to Hawaii’s solar energy landscape starting May 15, 2025. Hawaiian Electric is officially replacing its BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Level 1 program with a new and improved version: BYOD Plus.
This update, overseen by the Public Utilities Commission and supported by the Consumer Advocate and the solar industry, is designed to streamline and expand grid service capabilities by utilizing customer-owned battery storage systems.
What Is Changing?
The current BYOD Level 1 program will be closed on May 15 and replaced with BYOD Plus. While the new program goes live that day, Hawaiian Electric is still in the process of updating the Customer Interconnection Tool (CIT) to reflect the new program options graphically.
Until those updates are complete:
- Contractors and customers must still select “BYOD Level 1” when submitting applications in CIT.
- Hawaiian Electric will treat these submissions as BYOD Plus applications.
